CEDAW Concluding Observations

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is an international bill of rights for women. It was adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly and, defines what constitutes discrimination against women. Additionally, it sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination.  CEDAW was ratified by Trinidad and Tobago in 1989. In doing so, Trinidad and Tobago committed itself to undertake measures which would end discrimination against women.

Port of Spain: The Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister (Gender and Child Affairs) is aware of the disturbing video being circulated on Social Media which shows a young female stating that she is being sexually harassed by three young men while walking in Port of Spain after she was finished exercising.

The Office of the Prime Minister (Gender and Child Affairs) strongly condemns these acts of harassment and is reminding the public that every woman and girl should be allowed to walk the streets freely without the fear of being abused by others.

Commemoration of World Population Day 2016

In commemoration of World Population Day 2016, the United Nations Population Fund and the UN System in Trinidad and Tobago, in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister, Tobago House of Assembly, Ministries of Planning and Development, Sport and Youth Affairs, Social Development and Family Services, and members of civil society held a forum for youth, government officials, civil society and representatives from the UN on the issue of Investing in Teenage Girls to address teenage pregnancy.
